Marty Joe Cooper was born July 15, 1953, in Big Spring, Texas, to John Marvin Cooper and Joan (JoAnn) Sybil Johnson Cooper. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the age of 72 years.Marty attended Midland High School in Midland, Texas, where after graduation began his management career at Burger Chef in Midland. After leaving Burger Chef, he then began his retail career at Sears. Marty then moved to Abilene, Texas, and began working with Montgomery Ward’s. He worked there for nearly five years and was then hired at Wal-Mart in Burkburnett, Texas, as an assistant manager. He worked various jobs at other stores within the states of Texas and Oklahoma as an assistant manager before getting his own store in Holdenville, Oklahoma. A little over a year later, Marty transferred to Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and became the store manager. After being there for close to seven years, he left Tahlequah and became store manager in Owasso, Oklahoma. He was the store manager there for over 20 years before his retirement in 2012. After taking a couple of years to relax, Marty joined the Cornerstone Ace Hardware store in Owasso as the store manager in 2014. He worked there until retiring again in 2024.
Marty married Cleta Kay Samples in 1973 in Midland, Texas, which resulted in the birth of his two sons, Chad, in 1978, and Jared, in 1986. Later in life, he entered in a relationship with Karen Sue Chamberlain, for whom he was with until her passing in September of 2025. Marty and Karen helped to raise their granddaughter, Alyssa, with whom he had a special bond.
Marty enjoyed a variety of pastimes including fishing, playing golf, and trips to Mexico. Unfortunately, Marty was a loyal fan of Texas Longhorn and Dallas Cowboy football. He was an Eagle Scout in his youth, of which he was very proud. Marty was active in the Owasso community as a longtime member of the Owasso Chamber of Commerce, as well as Bailey Golf Ranch.
Those he leaves behind who hold a lifetime of cherished memories include his two sons, Chad Cooper and his wife Jennifer, and Jared Cooper and his wife Katelyn, granddaughter, Alyssa Chamberlain, brother, Kevin Cooper and his wife Nancy, sister, Patricia Angley and her husband Chris. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Joan (JoAnn) Cooper, and fiancé, Karen Chamberlain.
A Celebration of Marty’s Life with be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2026, at First Church in Owasso with Pastor Leonard Pirtle officiating.
