he City of Owasso has officially lifted the evacuation order for the Cornerstone Shopping Center at 12338 E. 86th Street North, allowing businesses to reopen and resume normal operations effective Thursday, June 25, 2026.
The evacuation order was originally issued on June 18 after methane gas was detected beneath and around the property. Since then, the Owasso Fire Department, Oklahoma Natural Gas, and the Oklahoma Corporation Commission have worked together to monitor conditions and implement a mitigation plan.
A venting system has now been installed and is operational. According to the Owasso Fire Department, extensive atmospheric monitoring has found no detectable hazardous gas concentrations outside the building, in monitoring test holes, or inside any of the businesses. Officials say safe atmospheric conditions have been established and maintained.
Based on those findings, Fire Chief David Hurst determined that the immediate life safety hazard no longer exists, allowing the evacuation order to be lifted.
While businesses are now authorized to reopen, officials note that continued safe occupancy depends on the ongoing operation and maintenance of the methane mitigation system. The property owner will remain responsible for maintaining the system and notifying the Owasso Fire Department if hazardous conditions return. The Fire Department also retains the authority to conduct future inspections and monitoring and may take additional action if conditions change.
